Export Your AI-Built Project to GitHub: Every Tool, One Place
Step-by-step export guides for Replit, Lovable, Bolt, v0, Base44, Firebase Studio, Databutton, Create.xyz and Emergent — plus the universal method that works when the tool has no export button.
Why export at all?
AI app builders are excellent at getting a product started and terrible at being its permanent home. The moment you want version control, code review, a second contributor, CI, a coding agent working on the real repository, or simply ownership of your own source — the project needs to live in GitHub (or GitLab/Bitbucket). Every guide below ends in the same place: a clean repository you control, with no secrets committed and a build that works outside the tool.
Pick your tool
- Replit → GitHub — direct Git integration; also see the complete Replit migration hub and continuing a Replit project in Feature1.
- Lovable → GitHub — built-in GitHub connection; see also fixing common Lovable errors.
- Bolt → GitHub — one-click repository creation with auto-sync.
- v0 (Vercel) → GitHub — via Vercel's Git integration or code export.
- Base44 → GitHub — export flow plus the universal fallback.
- Firebase Studio → GitHub — a real terminal means plain git works.
- Databutton → GitHub — conservative method that survives UI changes.
- Create.xyz → GitHub — conservative method that survives UI changes.
- Emergent → GitHub — official GitHub integration, plus the manual fallback.
The universal method (works for every tool)
When a tool has no export button — or its UI changed since the docs were written — this sequence always works:
Use the tool's download/export option, or copy the project files from its code view onto your machine.
Private by default. Do not initialise it with a README — you want a clean first push.
Add a .gitignore for build artefacts and environment files, and check that no API keys or secrets are in the tree.
git init → git add . → git commit → git remote add origin <repo-url> → git push -u origin main.
Clone the repository somewhere fresh and run the project. If it only builds inside the AI tool, the migration is not done.
After export: from prototype to product
Your coding agent comes with you: clone the repository and run Claude Code, Cursor, or Codex in the project folder — from here they work on your real codebase instead of the builder's sandbox.
Export gives you ownership; it does not give you a delivery process. When the repository is yours, the next constraint is turning ideas into planned, reviewable, shippable changes — which is what Feature1 does on top of your GitHub repository: capability-led planning, user stories with acceptance criteria, and implementation that stays inside the gates whether a developer or a coding agent does the typing.
Frequently asked questions
Why export an AI-built project to GitHub?
AI app builders are good at starting a product and poor as its permanent home. Version control, code review, a second contributor, CI, a coding agent working on the real repository, or simply owning your source: all of these need the project to live in GitHub, GitLab or Bitbucket.
What if my AI tool has no export button?
Use the universal method. Get the code out with the tool's download option, or copy the files from its code view. Create an empty private GitHub repository with no README. Add a .gitignore and check for secrets. Then init, commit and push. Last, clone it somewhere fresh and confirm it builds.
How do I know the migration is done?
Clone the repository somewhere fresh and run the project. If it only builds inside the AI tool, the migration is not done. Every guide on this page ends in the same place: a clean repository you control, with no secrets committed and a build that works outside the tool.
Your prototype works. Is it ready to launch?
Two and a half minutes on what changes between a working prototype and a product people pay for, and what to check before you call it launched.
